Don’t have a smart TV? Don’t worry – you don’t need one, even if you want to stream the 25 000+ series, movies, documentaries and kids’ shows available on Showmax on your big screen.
If you have a big-screen TV and a streaming media player, whether it’s an Apple TV or Google Chromecast, all you need is your iOS or Android phone or tablet, the latest version of the Showmax app, a subscription, and a Wi-Fi connection, and you’re good to go.
Read on to find out more about how Showmax works on Apple TV and Chromecast.
Showmax for Apple TV
An Apple TV device plugs into your TV through an HDMI port. It functions like a “converter”, boosting your regular TV’s capabilities to those of a smart TV. By connecting to the internet over a Wi-Fi connection, and to your TV through the HDMI cable, it essentially connects your TV to the internet.
The way you use your Apple TV device to access Showmax depends on the version of Apple TV you have.
If you have the latest version, known as the fourth-generation Apple TV, streaming from Showmax is incredibly simple. All you have to do is search for and download the Showmax app on the Apple TV App Store, and enter your Showmax log in details (if you’re already a subscriber – if not, go to www.showmax.com to subscribe). And that’s it! You’ll now be able to stream series and movies from Showmax directly to your TV through Apple TV – you don’t need to use your iOS device at all.
But if you’re the owner of one of the earlier versions of Apple TV (i.e. second or third generation), you’ll need to use the AirPlay functionality. Luckily, it’s a very simple process. First, download the latest version of the Showmax app on your iOS phone or tablet. Log in if you’re already a subscriber (if you’re a new user, sign up here.) Now, use your phone or tablet to search for and select the show you want to stream. You will see an AirPlay icon on the bottom right corner of the video player on your device. Select this icon and pair to your Apple TV. The device will “send” the shows to your Apple TV over your Wi-Fi connection, and Apple TV will then stream them directly to your TV screen.
Remember that your phone or tablet will also need to be connected to Wi-Fi, or you’ll be using your mobile data for streaming.
Showmax Movies for Chromecast
Chromecast is a media streaming device that is similar to Apple TV, but is compatible with Android phones and tablets. It plugs into the HDMI port on your big-screen TV and connects to the internet over Wi-Fi, and it lets you stream shows from your phone or tablet onto your TV.
The latest version of the Showmax app has Chromecast support, which means that Showmax subscribers can stream shows from their phone or tablet onto their TVs. Simply download the latest version of the Showmax app from the Play Store, and enter your log-in details if you’re already a subscriber (or sign-up here if you’re a new user). Select the Google Cast icon and pair to your Chromecast receiver. Then search for and select the shows you want to stream. Press play, and the show will be on your TV instantly.
As long as your phone or tablet is running a version of Android that’s 4.1.0 (JellyBean) or higher, and you have a Wi-Fi connection at home that your mobile device and your Chromecast device can connect to, there’s nothing standing between you and your favourite binge-worthy shows on your big-screen TV – even if you don’t have a smart TV.
